Angola invited to attend summit on Congo River protection
The invitation was made by Congolese President Dennis Sassou Nguesso and conveyed on Wednesday in Luanda to the Angolan Head of State by the Congolese Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Jean Claude Gakosso.
At the end of the audience granted by the President of the Republic, Jean Claude Gakosso informed that the international summit is the result of an initiative to protect the fauna and flora of the countries that share the Congo River basin.
The Congo River, also known as the Zaire River, is the second largest in Africa, with an extension of 4,700 kilometers. In terms of aquatic life, it has 700 species of fish, several reptiles and a vast fauna and flora.
As special envoy, Jean Claude Gakosso also reported that he has discussed with President João Lourenço the situation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), which is making progress in preparing for the elections in December and a relative calm.
Angola and Congo are following the DRC process to help and, together with the international community, to ensure that the goals everyone wants free and fair elections are achieved.
The Republics of Angola and Congo maintain excellent relations of cooperation, involving the political and diplomatic sectors, transport, petroleum, trade, tourism, environment, among others, as well as within the framework of the international and regional institutions that both integrate.
