Tahawwur Rana Extradition Highlights: A Special NIA court on Friday sent Tahawwur Hussain Rana, the accused in the 26/11 Mumbai attacks, to NIA custody for 18 days and has proceeded with the second day of investigation. He was brought to India from the United States and had arrived in Delhi on Thursday. Rana was first brought before the Special NIA Court on Thursday evening. The NIA gave the court important evidence, including emails from Rana, to support their request for his police custody. Interestingly, PM Modi’s video from 2011 has resurfaced and gone viral. Following the attack he condemned the American government and urged the then Indian government to “raise voice against America” warning how terrorists will flea to the west in hope for freedom with consequences.
Senior lawyer Dayan Krishnan, who earlier led the extradition process for 26/11 co-conspirator David Coleman Headley, will now head NIA’s legal team in building a strong case against Tahawwur Rana. According to Times of India sources, Krishnan will be supported by a team that includes special prosecutor Narender Mann, a seasoned criminal lawyer who has previously represented the CBI in the Delhi High Court. The report further added that Krishnan played a key role in the extradition of Rana. His team presented strong evidence in U.S. courts, which led to all of Rana’s appeals being rejected.
Meanwhile, the US State Department has said that they are committed to working with India to fight global terrorism, following the extradition of Tahawwur Rana to India. The department’s spokesperson Tammy Bruce said in a press briefing that the US has consistently backed India’s efforts to bring justice to those responsible for the attacks. She also said that the US is proud to have extradited Rana, who is now in India’s custody and will face trial for his involvement in planning the 2008 attacks. “”On April 9th, the United States extradited Tahawwur Hussain Rana to India to face justice for his role in planning the horrific 2008 Mumbai terrorist attacks… These attacks resulted in the tragic loss of 166 lives, including six Americans, that shocked the entire world,” she said.
Bruce added that the US and India would continue to work together to fight terrorism globally and highlighted the strong cooperation between the two countries in this case.
