ICC boss optimistic about Zim cricket

INTERNATIONAL Cricket Council (ICC) chairman Jay Shah

INTERNATIONAL Cricket Council (ICC) chairman Jay Shah arrived in Zimbabwe yesterday expressing his optimism that his visit would inspire the game in the country to reclaim its former glory.

In a brief interview, Shah praised some of Zimbabwe’s former cricket greats, highlighting their impressive performances in the early 1990s.

Shah hopes that Zimbabwe cricket will regain its top performance, reminiscent of the early 1990s.

“I am happy to be here and glad for the warm reception from the Zimbabwe Cricket chairperson and his board,” Shah told reporters on arrival at Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport in Harare.

“I think Zimbabwe has the potential to go back to top performance like in the early 1990s.”

Shah specifically mentioned some of Zimbabwe’s former cricket stars, including Edo Brandes and the Flower brothers, Andy and Grant, who were known for their exceptional talent on the field.

“They had players like Edo Brandes, Flower brothers, all the players were working hard,” he said.

“I hope, after this meeting here, I think Zimbabwe cricket will be on top in future.”

The ICC board will hold its meeting in Harare and Victoria Falls from today through to Sunday.

This marks the first time the global cricket governing body is hosting its full board meetings in Zimbabwe.

Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) managing director Givemore Makoni expressed his excitement about hosting the ICC board meetings.

“It’s the first of its kind,” Makoni said.

“We’re pretty excited to be hosting it and it’s a good time for ZC.

“We’ve hosted games and now we’re hosting a conference, which is something good for the future.

“It shows that Zimbabwe is a safe tourism destination, it’s a good endorsement for ZC.”
