Jordan Dice adds Saginaw’s Court Street Theater to growing business empire

The person who owns the Midland Mall, St. Laurent Brothers and the State Theatre in downtown Bay City has now acquired a piece of Saginaw history.

Local entrepreneur Jordan Dice has acquired the Court Street Theater in Saginaw, according to an announcement by Dice’s Dice Corp.

“Events have been a big focus lately,” Dice said in a statement. “We’ve successfully held 26 events at the State Theatre since reopening last fall, another 30 are on the calendar, and we’re having monthly events at the mall now too. I’m pleased with the outcome.”

The 87-year-old entertainment venue, 1216 Court St., was scheduled to serve as the focus of an online auction later this month, but a sales deal was reached before that occurred.

More excerpts released from a text chain involving U.S. national security officials discussing a military strike in Yemen appeared to coincide with Vice President J.D. Vance preparing for a visit to Michigan, including Saginaw County.

Vance was one of 18 officials included in the group text chat on an app known as Signal, where officials appeared to mistakenly add Atlantic Editor-in-Chief Jeffrey Goldberg to the chain of communication.

Memorial dinner to benefit daughter, 4, of Saginaw social worker killed in murder-suicide

A memorial dinner is planned for a Saginaw social worker recently slain in a murder-suicide incident, the benefits going to her little girl.

Jackie Jo Torrez, 34, died March 7 when she was shot inside a room at the Holiday Inn Express at 3990 Baldwin Road in Auburn Hills. The man police say killed her, 33-year-old Marcus I. Taylor, then fatally shot himself.

Jackie Jo’s Dine & Dance Fiesta is to begin at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 12, at the Birch Run Moose Lodge 2426, 12326 Gera Road. The event is to feature a taco bar starting at 4 p.m. for $15 per person, a bounce house for children, silent auction, bake sale, 50/50 raffle, and merchandise for sale.

Saginaw County man stabbed 15 times 2 years ago frustrated by court delays

Next month marks two years since a Saginaw Township man was attacked in his home recording studio.

The assault left him with more than 15 stab wounds to his head and back before he managed to flee to the sanctuary of a neighbor’s house.

The younger man accused of perpetrating the assault, though, has yet to face trial. Charged with a life offense, he is free on bond as his attorney plans an insanity defense.

Saginaw transit authority considers fare increases, service reductions

Saginaw Transit Authority and Regional Services (STARS) officials plan to vote in the coming months on measures that would trim up to $800,650 from the bus system’s annual budget.

The proposed cuts include ending route services one hour earlier than the existing Monday-to-Friday schedule as well as increasing fares for the general public from $1 to $1.50 along with senior citizens and people with disabilities from 50 cents to 75 cents.

SVSU to host FIRST Robotics state championship for 7th year

Saginaw Valley State University will host the FIRST Robotics state championship next month, which university officials said could bring millions of dollars to the community.

The FIRST in Michigan state championship begins Thursday, April 3, and runs through Saturday, April 5. The competition is expected to bring 160 FIRST Robotics teams representing high schools throughout the state to the area, according to a news release.

Saginaw man charged with murder in Bay City man’s shooting death

After spending a night in jail, a Saginaw man has been charged with killing a Bay City father of one in a robbery.

Shawn D. Meredith Jr., 33, on Tuesday, March 25, appeared before Bay County District Judge Mark E. Janer for arraignment on single counts of felony murder, armed robbery, felony firearm, carrying a concealed weapon, and felon in possession of a firearm.

The first two counts are life offenses. A felony firearm conviction mandates a two-year prison sentence consecutive to any related stint.

Bay City parolee withdraws plea to drunkenly killing woman in Saginaw Township crash

Earlier this year, a Bay City parolee did not contest a judge convicting her of killing a woman in a drunken Saginaw Township crash. S

She’s changed her tune after the judge indicated he’d send her to prison for longer than she expected.

Saginaw County Circuit Judge Darnell Jackson on Monday, March 24, informed 45-year-old Bobbi Jo Shively he would not impose the sentence he’d previously agreed upon.

Saginaw parole absconder with dozens of convictions charged with trying to break into party store

A Saginaw parole absconder with more than 20 burglary convictions on his record is charged with trying to break into a local party store.

Police on Dec. 13 responded to an alarm at the Short Stop Depot Market, 6055 Tittabawassee Road in Saginaw Township.

A man was recorded by surveillance cameras trying to break into the business. When the alarm started going off, the would-be burglar gave up his attempts and fled, prosecutors allege.
