It's not a secret that Alberta has more to offer than city streets. It's famed for its rocky peaks, glacial lakes, and prairie landscapes. A visit to the province isn't complete without looking beyond the borders of Calgary.

You'll probably fly into the city, but adventure calls elsewhere. We turned to readers on the Narcity Canada Facebook page to find out where to go in Alberta, instead of staying in Calgary.

From small towns with unreal views to natural wonders — people came through with some suggestions are will basically guarantee a fun trip. Get you're Airbnb app open and group chat ready, because these spots call for a trip.

Waterton National Park

The prairies meet the peaks in this unbelievably beautiful park. Just two and a half hours from Calgary this place has a little bit of everything for the adventurer out there.

Trails within the park can take you past expansive lakes, through a colourful red canyon, to jagged mountain peaks, and past rolling grasslands. You can also stay in the car and still get breathtaking views. The Red Rock Parkway will take you past the grasslands and right to theRed Rock Canyon.

You've got the wild beauty of the nature here, but also a quaint little town where you can explore shops and restaurants. There's a spa, hotels, and tour options in the village, so you don't need to rough it here (although there are tons of campsites too if that's your jam).

The pristine nature here isn't just for daytime, either. This spot is a dark sky preserve, and at night it's aglow with stars. Far away from light pollution, you can look up and be amazed by the view. Depending on when you go you might also be able to see the Northern Lights shine here.

Canmore

If you want a picture-perfect mountain town experience, this is where you'll find it.

This charming small town is nestled in the Rocky Mountains and has the iconic Three Sisters Mountain overlooking it. Wandering down the main street you'll get a constant view of the picturesque peaks, all while getting to stop in at the cute shops and restaurants.

This spot is known to be less busy than the nearby tourist hot-spot of Banff, offering the same natural beauty with a bit less crowds.

Hiking is a go-to activity here, and Grassi Lakes Trail is a popular choice thanks to it's bright turquoise water and mountain views.

Drumheller

This small town is just an hour and 30 minutes from Calgary and is known as the "Dinosaur Capital of the World." That's right — they're all about the Jurassic and even have a giant T-Rex statue in town to prove it.

The Royal Tyrrell Museum here is the spot to go to learn more about it all and see the extensive fossil collection.

There's also some incredible natural scenery to take in here though, with trails that take you through the stunning landscape. Horseshoe Canyon and Horsethief Canyon are both go-tos, and you can't miss seeing the famous hoodoos — which are just 15 minutes from town.

If you love dinosaurs then head to Dinosaur Provincial Park, about an hour and a half from Drumheller and another spot locals recommended.

Jasper

Heading back into the Rockies, this small town near Banff. Jasper National Park is right beside Banff National Park (further away from Calgary) and is actually the biggest national park in the Canadian Rockies. As you can imagine, that means lots of exploring awaits you here.

The town is more low-key but still has a lot to do and all the amenities you need. The real intrigue, of course, is the nature.

Maligne Lake & Spirit Island is a beautiful small island within a serene lake. It's surrounded by mountains, making the whole scene that much more majestic. Other must-see spots are Maligne Canyon and Athabasca Falls, but there's no shortage of wonder here.

Banff

Of course while people provided some other vacation destination options, Banff couldn't go without mention.

Yes it's hyped up, but also for good reason. Time and time again Banff gets ranked as one of the best destinations in the world, thanks to it's beauty, endless activities, and lively town. It delivers on the signature Rocky Mountain experience, with a cozy small town vibe framed by rocky peaks, glistening lakes nearby and countless hikes.

Then you have the Banff Upper Hot Springs, where you can soak in some mineral water after a long day of enjoying the great outdoors. The winter here is renowned but the summer comes alive with colourful flowers, booming waterfalls, and stunning campsites.

Best of all, most of these places are just a day trip away from Calgary, so you don't have to skip the city entirely. Spend a day or two enjoying Calgary but then get ready to soak in nature at it's best.
