Mary and Walter Koep fled their Laurel Street home in Brainerd because of noise from the county's nearby building project. Now they want the county to foot their hotel bill. The Koeps, who said construction noise was a “living hell,” submitted a bill for $91.98 from the Ramada Inn. The county board is reviewing the matter.

Katie Carlson, daughter of Martin and Nancy Carlson of Brainerd, and a 1994 Brainerd High School grad, has been selected as one of two Minnesota Advanced Placement State Scholars. Stu Lade, AP coordinator at BHS, notes this is the third time that Brainerd has had the top female scholar in the state.

(Photo) With two swings and less than 30 seconds elapsed in the first round, Brainerd's Joe Bock sent Scott Johnson – ranked 8th in the nation at 156 pounds – to the canvas for a knock-out in the Upper Midwest Golden Gloves Tourney. Tim Kelm at 125 and Troy Herron at 147 also advanced to the semifinals with wins.

Hank's Sports Shop, defeated last year by Paul Bunyan Oil in the YMCA City Basketball League tourney, made an acquisition in the off-season. They picked up Dale and Jimmy Brown, who scored 22 and 19 points respectively as Hank's beat Paul Bunyan Oil for this year's title, 73-70.
80 years ago (1945)
Their run for the state basketball title is over for C-I, but the Rangers gave a good account of themselves before bowing to a much taller Ely team 43-33. The score was knotted at 31-31 entering the final quarter before Ely ran away with the game. Johnny Novak and Jim Malosky led C-I with 11 and 9 points.
100 years ago (1925)
The bill in the Legislature to provide for licensing automobile drivers in Minnesota, as is done in the east, was defeated. A St. Paul paper said it would have promoted safety and security on the roads. The Little Falls paper said that farmers opposed it and killed it, saying “driver licensing was a senseless idea.”

37/46: This truck belonged to Silas Hall's Transfer Line just after World War I. It was used for hauling freight from the NP (Northern Pacific Railroad) depot to stores around town as well as for other kinds of moving. The picture was taken in front of the railroad freight office. Before the truck, Silas Hal used teams of horses and wagons which he kept at 415 Main (now Washington Street). He launched a kite at 3 p.m. yesterday near the court house and it's still flying despite a near disaster when a truck caught the kite string. The weatherman says it will remain windy today.
