We continue to track a powerful winter storm system that will impact much of the region late Friday, Saturday into Sunday. Strong to severe thunderstorms, rain, and even some snow and blowing snow will be possible with this system. Before the system arrives, we are looking forward to more above-average temperatures. Record highs are likely on Friday.

Biggest Changes Since Yesterday:

Severe Weather Threat More Defined – SPC has introduced a Slight Risk (2/5) for southeast Minnesota (locations south and east of Mankato), with a Marginal Risk (1/5) extending northwest to Hutchinson, Mankato, Redwood Falls and Worthington. Large hail and straight-line winds are the primary concerns. An isolated tornado is possible but, as of right now, not as likely.

Wind Impacts More Certain – Gusts of 45-50+ mph are likely Saturday, increasing the risk for blowing snow and difficult travel.

Snowfall Forecast Uncertainty Remains – Still low confidence in exact amounts, but western Minnesota and eastern South Dakota will likely see the highest totals.

What to Expect:

Friday: Record highs in the 70s possible. (Mankato’s standing record is 68 degrees.) Thunderstorms are possible after 7pm, but the severe risk remains marginal, slightly higher south and east of Mankato.

Saturday: Rain changes to snow later in the day. It will be very windy.

Snow Accumulation: Accumulation in the Twin Cities and along I-35 looks limited. Accumulation will climb slightly as you go west, with around an inch possible from Hutchinson to Mankato to Fairmont. 1 to 2 inches from Willmar to Redwood Falls to Worthington. These numbers could still change depending on the timing of the rain-to-snow transition. Wind Impacts: Gusts 35-45 mph, with gusts up to 50 mph possible along and west of US Hwy 71.

Biggest Takeaways:

  • Severe Weather Threat Friday: Mainly southern Minnesota and northern Iowa. Hail and strong winds are possible.
  • Blizzard-like Conditions Possible Saturday: Western Minnesota and eastern South Dakota will see the worst wind and snow impacts.
  • Major Travel Impacts Expected West of Mankato: Saturday will be hazardous, especially west of US Hwy 75 and north of I-90.Low Confidence in
  • Snow Totals: Accumulation remains uncertain, but the highest amounts will be west of a Sioux Falls to St. Cloud line and along and east of the James River in South Dakota.
