SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WNDU) - Some young artists are getting a chance to work on more projects thanks to Martin’s Super Markets’ One School at a Time grant.

Our Lady of Hungary Catholic School in South Bend was just awarded a big check worth $1,000 to help buy new art supplies.

This colorful classroom is filled with talent and creativity.

“We’re sketching out anything we want. After that we paint on the CD. Or we can use marker,” said Giselle Gonzalez, a seventh grader at Our Lady of Hungary.

“I really love doing sunsets. Flowers and stuff I, really love that,” said Makieya Autumn Ranges, eighth grader.

The enrollment at Our Lady of Hungary is primarily Hispanic and these students are able to use art to express their faith and future.

“To show that you really love your culture and what you do. And what your culture has done for you,” Gonzalez said.

For the kids who don’t share a passion for art, there’s a teacher who encourages them.

“They always tell me, ‘I can’t draw.’ I say, ‘Yes you can, anything is possible. Anything is art to me’, " said Herminia Galicia, better known as Ms. Mini to the kids and staff.

“She buys tons of stuff out of her own pocket to help these kids do these art projects that she wants to do with them,” said Shannon Matthew, assistant principal.

“Yes, I do,” Ms. Mini admitted. “I buy supplies basically every week or every time I get paid. If I need the supplies, I just buy it with my own money.”

They were thrilled to hear they were picked to win the $1,000 grant.

“Very grateful. When I found out I even cried,” Ms. Mini said.

“I think we really needed this. For supplies because we are running low on things,” Ranges said.
