'Highly talented': DC plane crash victims include RI skater Spencer Lane and mom Christine

- Six members of the Skating Club of Boston in Norwood were among those killed in the crash
- Spencer Lane, 16, and his mother Christine Lane, of RI, were two victims
- Spencer Lane had not been skating long but had rocketed to the top of the sport
A figure skater and his mother from Rhode Island were on board a passenger plane that collided with an Army helicopter near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport near Washington, D.C., Wednesday night, an official from the Skating Club of Boston confirmed.
Doug Zeghibe, CEO and executive director of the Skating Club of Boston in Norwood, Massachusetts, told the media Thursday that six members of the club were on the plane, including Barrington, Rhode Island, residents Christine Lane and Spencer Lane.
Spencer Lane, 16, was a skater for the club and was traveling with his mother, Christine Lane, as well as the other members of the club on the flight from Wichita, Kansas.
Officials said Thursday morning that they believe there are no survivors from the accident, which occurred when an American Airlines flight attempted to land and collided with the Black Hawk helicopter.
'A crazy kid': 16-year-old from Rhode Island among DC plane crash victims
Zeghibe said the skaters, coaches and their families on board the plane that crashed Wednesday night were coming back from Wichita, Kansas, after last week's U.S. Figure Skating Championships.
They include skater Spencer Lane, whom Zeghibe described as a "highly talented" figure skater, and his mother Christine Lane.
"Spencer, in the best way possible, was a crazy kid," Zeghibe said.
Zeghibe said Spencer Lane "has not been skating that long, and just rocketed to the top of the sport."
On Instagram Wednesday, Spencer Lane shared a series of photos on his story, including one on the plane before takeoff.
"Thank you so much @team.genia.vadim , @annehgoldbergbaldwin , and @skatingclubbos for supporting me in achieving my goal, and always pushing me to be the best i can be," he wrote.
Douglas Lane, Spencer Lane's father and Christine Lane's husband, spoke to WPRI Thursday about his wife and son, saying the teenager's energy was "infectious" and he was "loved by everyone" – from the adults running the club to the "smallest skaters" and those hoping for a chance at the Olympics. He told WPRI that he had been hearing all morning from people in the community that were helped by his wife.
"She was one of those people that could plug in anywhere and connect with people and build a real bond," he said of Christine Lane.
'Embedded in our community': Skater's mother was also on board plane
Zeghibe said Spencer Lane's mother, Christine Lane, and the others involved in the crash were "very much embedded in our community."
"Personally I'll just say wonderful people," Zeghibe said.
He said Christine Lane and Spencer Lane lived in Barrington and traveled to the Massachusetts club up to seven days a week for practice.
