Virginia Breeze Bus Lines reported record ridership during 2024 with the local Highlands Rhythm route reporting the greatest increase.
The bus lines, operated by the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation, reported the best results in its seven-year history, showing a 9.2% in ridership compared to 2023, according to a written statement.
Highlands Rhythm, which connects Bristol Virginia with Washington, D.C., reported a 14% increase over the prior year with 17,716 riders.
“The record-breaking ridership in 2024 reflects the trust Virginians place in reliable and convenient travel options. Virginia Breeze Bus Lines plays a vital role in connecting people to opportunities, whether for work, education, or visiting loved ones,” according to DRPT Director Tiffany Robinson.
“DRPT is proud to support this service and remains committed to enhancing mobility throughout the Commonwealth,” she said.

The northbound bus leaves Bristol Virginia’s park and ride lot at I-81’s Exit 5 at 11 a.m., daily, makes seven stops along the way before reaching Union Station at 6:45 p.m.
The southbound bus departs Union Station daily at 12:50 p.m., makes the same seven stops along the way and arrives in Bristol at 8:40 p.m.
Overall, Virginia Breeze transported nearly 65,000 passengers across its four routes during the past year.
Nearly half of those — 32,278 — rode the Valley Flyer route between Blacksburg and Washington. That is a 6.78% increase over 2023 ridership, according to the statement.
Ridership of the Capital Connector route which links Martinsville and Richmond with Washington rose 13%, to 7,786 riders.
The Piedmont Express, which connects Danville and Washington, D.C., increased 4% to 6,942 riders.
The service’s four routes that operate daily in both directions demonstrated strong ridership growth, showcasing its appeal to travelers across the state.
