ELK RAPIDS — Elk Rapids Indigenous Youth and Friends are hosting the Spring Arts and Crafts Fair from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 27 at Elk Rapids High School.

Cooking class

KINGSLEY — The next “Simply Delicious” cooking class will begin at 10 a.m. April 27 at Traverse Area District Library- Kingsley Branch.

Pow wow at NMC

TRAVERSE CITY — Northwestern Michigan College’s Native American Student Organization is hosting a pow wow to honor the 2024 graduates from 1-4 p.m. April 27 on the south side of the Osterlin Building.

Grand entry is at 2:30 p.m. Vendors and food are available. Attendees can park in the Aspen or Cedar lots.

Book signing

TRAVERSE CITY — Local author Heather Shumaker will sign books from 1-3 p.m. April 27 at Horizon Books. The event will feature her “Saving Arcadia,” a story about land conservation in northern Michigan.

Open sewing

NORTHPORT — A free Sewing Open Studio will continue from 1-4 p.m. April 27 at Northport Arts Association’s Village Art Building.

Share tips and get suggestions while working on a sewing or fiber art project.

Documentary showing

TRAVERSE CITY — “The Letter League” will be shown at 6:30 p.m. April 27 in Milliken Auditorium.

The documentary tells of a pen pal project created in 2020 by local artist Heather Spooner. Purchase tickets at www.ampersandletteringlab.com/store.

Bluegrass show

LUDINGTON — The Special Consensus will perform at 7 p.m. April 27 at Ludington Area Center for the Arts.

The bluegrass show costs $25 at ludingtonartscenter.org. Pay $30 at the door.

Poetry event

TRAVERSE CITY — Poets’ Night Out will begin at 7 p.m. April 28 at City Opera House.

Area poets will read their poems during this free event.

Book club meets

TRAVERSE CITY — The East Bay Book Club will discuss “Hello Beautiful” by Ann Napolitano at 6 p.m. April 30 at the East Bay Township building. This is a program of Traverse Area District Library- East Bay Branch.

Artwork submitted

TRAVERSE CITY — Area artists’ works were submitted to the statewide traveling art show “Creative Minds Changing Minds,” which is sponsored by the Community Mental Health Association of Michigan.

Pieces by Martin Kiper, from Levering, and Melody Pruett, of Pellston, were chosen by North Country Community Mental Health. They will represent Antrim, Charlevoix, Cheboygan, Emmet, Kalkaska and Otsego counties in the art show.

Northern Lakes Community Mental Health selected art by Carolyn Trnka, of Traverse City, and the late Carla Richardson, from Cadillac, to represent Crawford, Grand Traverse, Leelanau, Missaukee, Roscommon and Wexford counties.

The traveling art exhibition will tour in northern Michigan in April and May 2025.
