Significant Dust Haze Advisory in effect

The Barbados Meteorological Services has issued a Significant Dust Haze Advisory for Barbados and its marine area.

A Dust Haze Advisory is issued when dust haze has already or is forecast to reduce visibility to between 5 to 10km within 48 hours.

The BMS says a plume of Sahara dust in the eastern Atlantic has begun to affect the island and is expected to increase in concentrations over the weekend.

The haze is forecast to reduce visibility from 10 km over the land and coastal waters of Barbados as early as Friday, April 19 and skies will appear slightly yellowish during the day.

BMS would like the public to know that:-

  • Persons with respiratory issues or allergies must travel with or have close at hand, all prescribed relevant medications in case of an emergency.
  • Marine users should stay close to shore, particularly if GPS is not in use on vessels.

The public is encouraged to monitor official sources for more information.

Additionally, advice provided by the Ministry of Health and Wellness should be followed.

The advisory was issued today at 9:00 a.m. and will be updated midday on Friday, April 19, or sooner if conditions warrant.
