The Foreign Office has announced changes to its travel advice for more than 30 countries and territories around the world allowing for non-essential travel.

Earlier this week the UK announced changes to its travel rules, scrapping the amber list in favour of the 'red list' and 'rest of the world' list, reports the Mirror.

When the travel changes were made none of the 32 countries and territories were on the red list.

The Foreign Office explained the reason for the large number of changes came "as part of a simplified system for international travel which has seen the replacement of the traffic light system with a single red list, and reduced testing requirements for eligible fully vaccinated travellers "

They added: "The FCDO will no longer advise against travel to non-red list countries on COVID-19 grounds, except in exceptional circumstances such as if the local healthcare system is overwhelmed."

Under the new travel rules system in the UK, Brits will face new requirements when returning from trips abroad.

Anyone returning to the UK from red list countries will need to spend 11 nights in a quarantine hotel costing £2,285 per adult.

As for 'rest of the world' destinations, the requirements depend on whether travellers have been fully vaccinated against Covid or not.

For those who are double jabbed, there will be one PCR test required on day two after landing.

Those who are unvaccinated/partially vaccinated will be required to take a pre-departure test, and PCR tests on days two and eight, as well as being required to self-isolate for 10 days. (There is a 'test and release' option where a fourth test with a negative result means you can stop self-isolating earlier).

The change in Foreign Office advice will also mean that travellers can head abroad without risking invalidating their travel insurance, as firms often look to the advice to determine whether travellers will be covered.

Of course just because the UK government says you can travel somewhere doesn't mean it's automatically open for holidays. Only a certain number of countries are open to Brits currently. The good news is that this includes holiday hotspots such as Spain, Greece and Turkey, without quarantine required on arrival (although you may need to show proof of vaccination or a negative PCR test).
