State offers land for traditional shrine

Mau Mau war veteran and the Kikuyu Council of Elders on Friday held a ceremony to thank the government for setting aside land to set up a shrine in the Mt Kenya Forest.

The council’s national chairman David Muthoga said access to the 100-acre shrine, which is in Narumoru at the protected Mount Kenya National Park ecosystem, came after decades of struggle and intensive lobbying within government.

“We now have a sacred shrine where elders and community high priests can conduct rituals and offer sacrifices to God. We are happy the government has addressed our plea,” he said.
