The British royals have another wedding to look forward to in 2018, as Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank have revealed the happy news that they're engaged .

Jack chose quite the breathtaking location for the moment too, as Buckingham Palace revealed that the couple got engaged during a getaway to winter sun hotspot Nicaragua.

No doubt he had his pick of spectacular landscapes to choose from, as the country in Central America boasts everything from picture-perfect fine sand beaches to dramatic volcanic scenery.

Then of course there are the romantic hotels and resorts in Nicaragua which have drawn in honeymooners and couples - especially those who love to go exploring.

Nicaragua doesn't disappoint. There's plenty to see and do, from eye-catching landmarks such as the Leon Cathedral, to the sweeping scenery that can be found in the nature reserves and Apoyo Lagoon.

1. Corn Islands

The beautiful Corn Islands are a hit with holidaymakers looking for a picture-perfect beach holiday, thanks to their fine sands, crystalline blue waters, hidden coves and luscious tropical landscape.

The two islands sit about 70km east of Nicaragua's Caribbean coast, and although tourism is one of the region's biggest industries, you still won't find crowds of tourists on the beach - ideal if you're a British royal looking to escape the crowds.

2. Our Lady of Grace Cathedral

History buffs and culture vultures will no doubt want to add this landmark to their bucket list. For a start, the cathedral boasts breathtaking colonial architecture and is the largest cathedral in Central America.

Therefore, it's unsurprising that it's a UNESCO World Heritage site, and continues to draw in visitors looking to get a glimpse of its breathtaking interiors.

Plus, its central location in Leon means you can use the opportunity to explore the city too!

3. Apoyo Lagoon

This stunning nature reserve sits between Masaya and Granada, and is a hit with nature-lovers thanks to the plethora of plants and wildlife living around the lagoon's dark blue waters.

Then of course there are the hiking trails that take you through some of the prettiest regions, not to mention the best hotspots for sweeping views.

It's an idyllic setting for those wanting to escape the hustle and bustle of daily life - and there are plenty of cheap hotels nearby if you want to set up a base.

4. Indio Maíz Biological Reserve

Nestled away on the southeastern corner of Nicaragua sits this beautiful 4,500 sq km reserve, where the dense green landscapes look like something out of a film.

Bordering the roaring San Juan river, the reserve is filled with exotic plants, colourful wildlife and plenty of footpaths and bridges to go exploring.

5. Islets of Granada

Thousands of years ago the Mombacho Volcano exploded, casting off huge rocks into Lake Nicaragua - a total of 365 islets to be exact.

All differing in size, they make for quite the eye-catching natural phenomenon, and many tourists enjoy day trips from Granada to come and explore.

There's plenty of wildlife that made the islets their home - but the Monkey Island tends to be a firm favourite with visitors.

6. Playa Maderas

This surfer's paradise is ideal for those who want to make the most of Nicaragua's breathtaking beaches without having to face the crowds of tourists.

It's not completely isolated though - you can expect plenty of bars and restaurants in nearby San Juan del Sur, a half hour's drive away, where you'll also find plenty of local culture and a vibrant nightlife (in fact, it's renowned for its party scene).

7. Cerro Negro volcano

An active volcano, Cerro Negro has long been attracting adrenaline junkies thanks to its steep slopes that make it an ideal hotspot for sandboarding .

The hike up the mountain takes about an hour so it's not one for the faint-hearted, but it's well worth it for the fun-filled slide down - not to mention the incredible views you'll see in the process.

8. Los Guatuzos

Located between the country's southern border and the picturesque Lake Cocibolca sit these protected wetlands, home to a myriad of wildlife, one-of-a-kind landscapes and an abundance of opportunities for adventure.

9. Museo Ruben Dario

Art and culture fans, this one's for you! Rubén Darío was a Nicaraguan poet who was at the forefront of modernism, and this museum in his name is packed with exhibitions about his life, as well as historical paintings and artefacts offering a glimpse into local heritage and culture.

10. Momotombo volcano

Towering high above the landscapes sits this gigantic volcano, right by the shores of Lago de Managua.

It is possible to take a hike up the mountain but you'll need to be in good shape for the challenging walk - still, it offers up seriously amazing views of Momotombito Island, Monte Galan lagoon and Xolotlán Lake, not to mention it boasts an impressive crater.
