The number of tourists visiting Latvia’s seaside resort city Jurmala this past summer grew by 23% against the same period a year ago, Zane Leite, a representative of the Jurmala City Council, told LETA citing data from the Central Statistical Bureau (CSB).

The guests staying hotels and other tourist facilities were mostly foreign tourists, with their share reaching 80% in the summer. Most of these tourists were from Russia, Lithuania, Estonia, Finland and Germany.

Compared to the summer of 2017, the number of tourists from Ukraine and Belarus rose considerably this summer, Leite said. The number of tourists from Ukraine jumped 66 % and the number of tourists from Belarus climbed 45% y-o-y. The number of Lithuanians visiting Jurmala increased by 18% and the inflow of German tourists rose 14%.

The number of Russian tourists in Jurmala increased by 38% this past summer, but there were also more guests from Israel, Poland, France and the US.

The number of local tourists choosing to stay in Jurmala hotels rose by 13% y-o-y. CSB data shows, however, that local tourists prefer to stay in the resort city’s hotels in spring and winter when the share of local travelers in the city rises by 30 to 40%.

Compared to the first nine months of 2017, Jurmala saw the number of tourists grow 18% in January-September 2018, with local tourists making up 30% and foreigners accounting for 70% of the total number.

“Seasonal analysis shows that guests from Lithuania, Russia, Israel, Finland and Great Britain mostly choose to spend time in Jurmala in summer, whereas the inflow of travelers from Estonia and Sweden is comparatively steady in all seasons,” said Leite.

Guests logging in rented summer cottages or apartments also make up a significant share of the city’s tourism segment, although it is not included statistics.
