Herat Drought Victims Appeal To Government For Help

About 180 families who have been badly affected by drought in Ghor, Badghis and Faryab provinces, have sought refuge in western Herat province and have appealed to the Afghan government and other humanitarian organizations for assistance.

These families have established camps in a suburb of Herat city in the past month.

TOLOnews reporter Tamim Hamid met some of these families and said they were living in desperate conditions.

“Some of the families have borrowed money to travel here and others were given assistance to get here. No one has asked about our problems; at least they supply us with clean water for now,” said Ghulam, a representative of the displaced families.

The majority of victims are farmers who have lost all assets to the drought.

Ghulam Nabi, 75, is a resident of Qaisar district of Faryab province and has lost everything.

“Some of our children are sick, a few were hit by cars on the roads, some are wounded, these are all the problems we are facing because of the drought; the drought has left us with nothing,” said Nabi.

“We are destroyed, for the sake of God , do something for us and help us,” said Mohammad Ayaz, a resident of Bala Murghab district of Badghis

Laal Bibi, 40, is a widow from Faryab who is also struggling to feed her two children.

“Yesterday I went to a home and washed their clothes, they gave me 200 AFs and I bought some food for my children,” said Laal Bibi.

According to reports, in the past ten days over 600 families have been displaced from their areas due to droughts and floods in various regions of the country.

Last year the number of displaced due to war was an estimated 75,000 people.
