Travel: Seeing it all in Seattle, from A to ZZ

Open since 1907, Pike Place Market is the nation’s oldest continually functional farmer’s market. The expansive Market is located in a nine-acre National Historic District and home to hundreds of farmers, street performers, residents and craftspeople.

It was ZZ Top and the Doobie Brothers — part of the Chateau Ste. Michelle Summer Concert Series — that lured my husband and me to the Seattle, Wash., region last August. If you like quality music and wine, you may want to add it to your bucket list.

Also whetting our sensory appetite was a visit to Chihuly Garden and Glass, host to the colorful, extraordinary and prolific glass sculpture of artist Dale Chihuly, who was born in neighboring Tacoma. The exhibit is located in Seattle Center, a 74-acre gathering space providing a home for over 30 educational, entertainment and cultural entities. You could spend hours, if not days, wandering such attractions as the Space Needle, Museum of Pop Culture and the Pacific Science Center.

My all-time favorite attraction in Seattle and a must for foodies and the naturally curious, however, is Pike Place Market. A labyrinth of independent and quirky businesses, fresh produce, specialty foods and fascinating artists and musicians will quickly captivate; the mournful and mesmerizing sound of bow against saw was unlike any instrument I’ve heard.
