There are severe weather warnings across large parts of the the UK as icy conditions and snow showers continue today.

Motorists should expect delays and rural areas could even be ‘cut off’ as heavy snowfall is expected tonight.

The Met Office forecast snow showers for parts of Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales, northern England and the Midlands with yellow and amber severe weather warnings issued for today and tomorrow.

Parts of the UK can expect one to two inches of snow but northern Scotland, Northern Ireland, north Wales and the northwest Midlands could get eight inches.

Temperatures could drop as low as  -6C (21F) in Scotland and Wales in rural areas and where there is lying snow.

The Met Office said: ‘On Sunday there is a good chance that some rural communities could become cut off.’

In Scotland 18,000 households had been without power but electricity supplies have been restored.

Storm Caroline will continue to cause havoc in the north, with winds of upto 70mph expected, and the south coast will battered by strong wins throughout the weekend as Storm Ana passes through France.

Shropshire Police in the West Midlands advised against driving unless it was ‘absolutely necessary’ as ‘hazardous’ driving conditions have been reported

Both ScotRail and Arriva Trains Wales told passengers to check before travelling on Saturday as customers were told to ‘be careful’.

Yesterday schools across the UK were closed including all schools in Orkney, Shetland, 172 schools in Wales and more than 350 in the West Midlands.

Highways England tweeted: ‘Please take care if travelling, drive for the conditions, snow is forecast for weekend.

‘Prepare for any eventuality make sure your vehicle is winter ready and you have warm clothing, food, drink, any medication you may need, boots, shovel and a torch.’
