In our Family Fun series, we review the best experiences, events and attractions to enjoy with kids in London and beyond.

What?

A stay at Legoland’s new Castle Hotel, which opened earlier this year. A fully themed experience, it offers guests the opportunity to sleep in knights’ quarters, and immerse yourself and your family in a magical world of spells and potions — plus some more conventional food and drink.

Who?

Ideal for ages 2-16, but bigger kids will also be entertained.

Where?

The hotel is is set within Legoland Windsor, so all the site’s usual attractions are, quite literally, on your doorstep. It’s less than an hour’s drive from central London, and easily accessible by shuttle bus from Windsor & Eton Central station which is a 30 minute trip from Paddington.

The experience

Approaching the hotel was a sight to behold: Lego knights bearing trumpets and flags guard a draw bridge entrance and plastic flamed torches light up the walls, letting the magic begin before you even step foot inside.

The hotel offers you two different themed rooms to choose from, a brave knights’ hangout or a magical wizards’ dwelling. This is a tough decision as both rooms look amazing, and if we could have picked both we would have.

Wizard room

Each room accommodates a family of up to five and includes free Legoland souvenirs for the kids as well as exclusive Castle ID lanyards for them to personalise.

The rooms have cleverly been divided by a half wall, allowing children a bit of freedom to enjoy their own bunk beds right next to a large screen TV with dedicated Lego channels and movies. Lego boards are are also attached to their walls with a generous amount of Lego bricks available for play.

Even the en suite bathroom continues the Lego knight theme, right down to Lego hand soap, shower gel, and even a blushing Lego man on the reverse of the toilet door.

All guests at the castle hotel have access to the indoor, pirate-themed swimming pool, including slides and water cannons, and if you feel you still have a bit of energy left after chasing your little ones around, there is also a gym available for adults.

For your evening meal there is the choice between the Tournament Tavern banquet hall and Grill restaurant, both situated in the Castle. Or you could take a short walk across the wooden drawbridge to the neighbouring Legoland resort hotel for the Bricks family restaurant and skyline bar.

Dinner is served

Breakfast features a plentiful buffet of pastries, fruit salad, yogurts, toast and the likes to help yourself to throughout the morning, along with a selection of hot beverages and fruit juices, because after all being a castle V.I.P is thirsty work.

Make sure sure to fill up because you will need buckets of energy for the day ahead. The park’s rides range from those for thrillseeking daredevils only to more gentle options for the more cautious. Youngsters can gain their Lego land drivers licence after taking part in a mini drivers challenge, cool down on the water rides, sway on vikings boats, get dizzy in spinning pots and fly high in the swing carousels.

"Normally my husband and I end up leaving a long day at theme parks slightly relieved to be on the way home... however even we were sad to leave this time"

An absolute must do if visiting the park is to experience the newest 3D interactive ride of Ninjago, which lets you shoot virtual weapons at Lego baddies. Ninjago was so fun and unique to other rides we have experienced that my daughters went straight from the rides exit back into the queue for a second go!

At what cost?

The resort is currently offering a package deal priced at £680.20 for a family of two adults and two children, consisting of one day park entry with one night stay in the Castle Hotel (including breakfast), plus free park tickets for the following day.

Worth it?

Yes, for a special ocasion or planned treat. The experience really is an enchanting one and you will leave with many unforgettable quality memories.

Adults say:

“Normally my husband and I end up leaving a long day at theme parks slightly relieved to be on the way home and exhausted from the outing, however even we were sad to leave this time, feeling energised from all the excitement.”

Kids say:

"When can we go back again?"
